The Bartering System

Well we survived the first week of school. It really is a hard thing getting used to early mornings. This said from someone who is blogging at 12:30 am. Oh well, it will be a quick post and to the point.
Both of the kids love their teachers. (I did have an issue with the former teacher writing in super big letters his name on the back of his messenger bag...Hello!! Open the bag up and his name was written in it!! Still ticks me off...but anyways...) Seamus just got shifted into another classroom today and loves this teacher already. That is a good sign. I was worried about him adjusting to the change(like overprotective mothers do) but he had no problem with the move. He said that he felt "famous" (hey famous Seamus) when he went to the classroom. Everyone was excited and was calling his name. So I am happy for him.
With school comes the joy of making lunches. I dislike making lunches. I am not one of those mothers who really puts creativity into their lunches at all. Lunches usually consist of a sandwich, drink, cookies(homemade cuz I have become the queen of making cookies)and either a yogurt or a pudding. My mom threw a loop into the old comfort zone of lunch making. She bought the boys new lunch bags (along with a bunch of other back to school stuff...she is amazing!!!)and with the lunch bags she bought new thermoses.
"I just thought it would be good for soups or something special" she said smiling.
"Something special...." I said smiling while thinking "this sucks big time!"
~~
On the second day of school when I picked up the boys I asked the token question, "did you like your lunch?"
Seamus smiled and said, "it was delicious".
Jonas had a mischevious grin and said,"yah it was good."
"How about the sandwich?" I asked Jonas.
"Mom...the sandwich was so good I can't even remember what it was!"he said with a twinkle in his eye.
"Hmmm...the peanut butter must have been really tasty then!" I said testing out the waters.
"Oh yeah...mmm...I love peanut butter!" he said.
"Peanut butter?" Seamus asked. "I had ham and cheese!"
"So did you Jonas!" I responded.
"What did you get for the sandwich?" I asked.
"Oh a great deal. Cheese crackers and another type of sandwich!" he smiled.
So this brings me to today and the thermoses. (I thought this was going to be a quick post!!) Last night the boys had their favourite quickie meal. I actually don't want to post it, because it may sound gross, but here it goes. They had Kraft Dinner with some tomato soup in it. There was lots of leftovers so I thought I would take the opportunity and use the thermoses. In the morning I heated up the leftover tomato soup KD(okay it is sounding really gross...sorry my poor children!!)and put it into their thermoses. I felt proud of my originality not like my usual run of the mill kind of lunches that I usually make.
I picked the boys up from school and immediately Seamus said, "lunch was great mom!"
I looked at Jonas and he said, "Roy said it was gross!"
"Roy!" I asked.
And he nodded.
"So I guess you got a better deal than Roy did!" I responded.
We all laughed.
"Yeah he got ripped off!"he said laughing.
~~
So tonight I made the boys lunch and thought to myself, "hmm...what will this PB and J sandwich get?"
Maybe my son will be a trader or something...you never know!
Anyhow next week will be the start of my crazy fall and winter schedule. Hockey is starting,as is Tae Kwon Doe...as is all the other activities we try and fit in...
Oh well....the life of a SAHM.
Enjoy your day!

HAHAHA those boys are too clever. I hate that we can't do nuts here. PB&J would be SO much easier! Sarah gets KD in her lunch, also Chunky Soup (in the thermos), Ramen Noodles (her favourite), Chicken Noodle Soup drained of almost all the broth, spaghetti, pasta and pesto (her second favourite) and the occasional sandwich though she rarely eats those. Thermoses are my lifesaver in the winter seeing as how sandwiches rarely cut it with her :) Glad the boys are enjoying their meals ;)

Lol, loved this post, as I'm just walking into this whole new world of lunch making and sending little ones off to school. And yes I agree, the early mornings are rank. (that's why I'm off back to bed right away!) I'm still walking in the novelty of it all, I've only made two lunches so far, as my daughter only goes every second day, and each time was a blast. I was so excited to give her little treats and today I packed her some baby carrots (her favorite). I'd like to get a thermos too, for alphagetti and such. And I don't know why you keep defending your tomato soup and mac and cheese creation, I grew up on that stuff! It's awesome! :)

I agree with you as well. I hate make lunches...but the thermos has also made it more interesting around here. I can get those cans of chunky soup or whatever and just nuke up enough and stick it in the thermos and Syd loves it. I also usually pack her a fruit...or a squiggle (real fruit snack, their new) and a yogurt or crackers. The other day she came home and said, "ya know mom, we can have junk food in our lunches..we're allowed". Um, ya, I'll get right on that kiddo.

Anyways...glad that Seamus is now famous in his new class, haha. Its going to be an interesting year, I can already tell. Take care.

I'd been making school lunches for ten years when last year I had enough of the complaining. Now the girls make their own lunches, I just supervise. Their new thing is wraps. They love the wraps! Pizza pockets are great in the winter. Wrap them in tinfoil and they stay somewhat warm in the insulated lunch box.

I always think of the peanut butter sandwiches my mom made me, she would butter both pieces of bread and then put a thin layer of peanut butter. GAK! It still makes me shudder.
